A. Overview

The registered logo of the Pennsylvania Dental Association represents an important element of PDA's identity. Consistent use of the logo by PDA, component organizations, members and PDA-endorsed vendors reinforces this visual image as the symbol of quality dental care in Pennsylvania.

The logo of the Pennsylvania Dental Association is the exclusive property of the Pennsylvania Dental Association. Any use or reproduction thereof by anyone not a member in good standing in the association, by any vendor that is not contractually authorized by the Pennsylvania Dental Association, or by any such member or PDA-endorsed vendor that fails to conform to the restrictions and guidelines set forth herein is specifically prohibited.

These guidelines are subject to change at any time by PDA. Notwithstanding these guidelines, any use of the logo that does not reflect good taste, professionalism or quality is prohibited; PDA retains sole discretion to make a determination in this regard, which shall be final. Any questions regarding logo usage that are not addressed here should be directed to the PDA Central Office.

B. Restrictions on Use - Violations

PDA owns the rights to this logo and can limit its use. Whenever there is any question of whether a proposed use of the PDA logo conforms to these rules, the burden is upon each member involved in that practice or the PDA-endorsed vendor to confirm that the usage is in conformity with these rules and guidelines. In any event, however, PDA shall have the sole discretion to make a decision, which shall be final.

Violation of the rules governing member use of the PDA logo may result in disciplinary action by PDA, including termination of membership and civil suit for violation of copyright material. Violation of the rules governing endorsed vendor use of the PDA logo may result in termination of the relationship with a vendor, civil suit for violation of copyright material, damages and injunctive relief.

The member or vendor shall be responsible to pay all costs of PDA incurred in enforcement of these rules and guidelines, including counsel fees.

C. Use by Members in Good Standing

These guidelines have been developed to encourage members to incorporate the PDA logo into their practices and to provide instructions for proper logo usage. By using the logo, individual members are identified as professionals who are committed to providing quality dental care and to protecting patients' rights and freedom of choice.

C.1. Basic Rules

C.1.1. Components of Approved Usage

The logo of the Pennsylvania Dental Association is the official registered identifying symbol of PDA. Its approved usage consists of three parts:
  • The identifying symbol, including the designation ®.
  • The printed name of the association (i.e., Pennsylvania Dental Association).
  • One of the following phrases: "Member, Pennsylvania Dental Association" or "Member of the Pennsylvania Dental Association."

C.1.2. Design Copy

The PDA logo must always be used in the proper and complete form. It must always be accompanied by the phrase "Pennsylvania Dental Association" and either the phrase "Member, Pennsylvania Dental Association" or "Member of the Pennsylvania Dental Association." These three components may be combined in various arrangements, depending upon the type of usage. However, all three must be used in proximity as befitting a three-element design. Several arrangement possibilities exist. 

C.2. Technical Reproduction

C.2.1. Color Reproduction

The official color of the symbol is a shade of green specified as PMS 323. The name of the association in color reproduction should always be in black or in the same color used for all other copy.

C.2.2. Single Color or Black and White Reproduction

Although the use of PMS 323 is preferred, the logo may be reproduced in a single color of the member's choice on either white or colored stationery.

C.2.3. Typeface

The "Berkeley" typeface must be used in the phrases "Pennsylvania Dental Association," "Member, Pennsylvania Dental Association" and "Member of the Pennsylvania Dental Association." A coordinated and consistent use of the print style is recommended to establish and maintain a uniform look in all printed pieces.

C.2.4. Size

The size of the reproduced logo shall not exceed one inch in height. The logo must be sized proportionally; the logo may not be distorted in any dimension.
The relationship in the size of the two design elements — the symbol and the name — may not be altered.

C.2.5. Embossing

Blind embossing on office stationery and other printed material — producing a raised image on a surface without applying ink — is permissible when it conforms in all other ways with these guidelines.

C.2.6. Paper Stock

White paper is recommended, but another color of the member's choice is permissible.

C.2.7. Reproduction Proofs

Reproduction proofs of the symbol must be used unless specific permission is granted for other means of reproduction. Proofs are available from Natalie Owens, creative design manager.

C.3. Authorized Logo Use

C.3.1. Specifics of Member Usage

The logo may be used on stationery (envelopes and letterhead), business and appointment cards, newsletters, and brochures and only one time on the front page of member- and practice-specific websites of PDA members in good standing. Should anyone forfeit membership by failure to pay dues or assessments or for any other reason, permission to use the logo ceases immediately. Former members, whose membership has lapsed for any reason, are strictly prohibited from using the registered logo in any form whatsoever.

Many PDA members are incorporated as a professional corporation or a professional association for the purpose of practicing dentistry. The PDA logo may be used on stationery of a member's professional corporation or professional association provided that the member assures compliance with the following rules:
  • The corporation must be wholly owned and operated by PDA members in good standing.
  • All dentists employed or contracted to provide dental services for the corporation must be PDA members.
  • The logo may never be used in any fashion that states, implies, suggests or connotes that the corporation itself is a member of or affiliated with the Pennsylvania Dental Association.
  • In cases where the corporate name does not contain the names of the dentists involved in the practice (fictitious names), the PDA logo may only be used where it is clearly associated with the names of members and must be listed apart from the corporate title.
  • When the surnames of all dentists involved in the practice constitute the complete corporate title, the PDA logo may be used in a manner that keeps it distinct from the actual corporate name but more generally implies that the dentists named in the corporate title are members.
  • Member stationery may bear another design or trademark, but the PDA logo must be positioned separately to ensure that its distinct identity is maintained and that it identifies only the individual dentist(s) as a member(s) of PDA.

C.3.2. Use by Component Societies

The logo may be used on stationery of recognized component societies with the wording "A component of the Pennsylvania Dental Association."
Component societies may request permission from the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees to use the PDA logo in a manner not allowed by these guidelines. For example, a component society may want to include the PDA logo on billboards promoting National Children's Dental Health Month. In this case, it would need to be granted an exception to use the logo on material other than stationery, to reproduce the logo in a size greater than one inch in height, and to omit the wording "A component of the Pennsylvania Dental Association."

To request an exception to these guidelines, the component society must provide its request, in writing, to the Executive Committee at least four weeks in advance of the use of the logo. The request must include the following information:
  • The specific exception(s) to the guidelines being requested.
  • A copy of the way in which the logo will be used.
  • The name and phone number of the member submitting the request on behalf of the component society.

C.4. Prohibited Uses

C.4.1. Misrepresentation

The PDA logo may not be used in any way that might suggest:

  • That any dentist who is not currently a PDA member in good standing may be a member of PDA.
  • That any corporate or any other business organization is a member of PDA.
The PDA logo may not be used to promote personal business ventures unrelated to the practice of dentistry. For example, it may not be used to solicit sales of property, merchandise or non-dental services or to promote seminars, lectures, publications, or other organizations concerning dentistry or any other professional business area.
Furthermore, the logo may not be used on stationery that contains otherwise unethical or illegal representations of the character of the practice.

C.4.2. Advertising

Use of the PDA logo in advertising and promotional materials is restricted to the PDA, its component societies and any related organizations authorized by the PDA. The PDA logo may not be used in advertisements or other solicitational materials prepared on behalf of an individual member or on behalf of an informal association of members.

C.4.3. Presentations

The logo may not be used on personal title slides.

C.5. Questions and Violations

Whenever there is any question of whether a proposed use of the PDA logo conforms to these rules, the burden is upon each member involved in that practice to confirm that the usage is acceptable to the PDA. Violation of the rules governing member use of the PDA logo may result in disciplinary action by the PDA, including termination of membership and/or civil suit for violation of copyright material. The PDA owns the rights to this logo and can limit its use.
