2022 Annual Award Winners




PDA Distinguished Service Award

Stephen T. Radack, III, DMD

The 2022 Pennsylvania Dental Association Distinguished Service Award winner is Stephen T. Radack, III, DMD, for his leadership and service to the dental profession at the local, state and national level. Never one to rest on his laurels, Dr. Radack has continuously given his time to projects within the Erie County Dental Association and provided continuity for the volunteers of the Ninth District Dental Society by serving as secretary treasurer after he served as president of each organization.

Dr. Radack has held many offices on the state level as well, including, delegate, trustee, treasurer and president. His term as PDA president concluded in 2015 and he took on the role of associate editor of the Pennsylvania Journal (PDJ) in the same year. He took the reins as PDJ editor soon after, and, has served as editor since 2016. In addition, he represented PDA on ADA commissions, councils, committees and in the House of Delegates since 1994.

A strong supporter of his community, Dr. Radack has volunteered with the St. Paul’s Neighborhood Free Clinic for nearly 30 years and been a Dental Lifeline Network provider for 8 years. As part-time clinical faculty at LECOM School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Radack takes the time to mentor students and introduce them to the benefits of organized dentistry.

In Ninth District’s nomination, Dr. Marian Wolford summed it up when she wrote, “Dr. Radack clearly embodies the qualifications listed in the Distinguished Service Award description…a dentist whose contribution of time and effort to the PDA has been exceptionally significant, and whose public life and activities have been of such a nature as to reflect great credit upon the profession.” The Annual Awards Committee is honored to name Dr. Stephen T. Radack, III, as the recipient of the 2022 PDA Distinguished Service Award.

 
 


 

PDA Recognition Award

Stanley J. Heleniak, DMD

The PDA Annual Awards Committee selected Stanley J. Heleniak, DMD, to receive the 2022 Pennsylvania Dental Association Recognition Award. Dr. Heleniak, a board-certified Dentist Anesthesiologist, has a private practice in Lansdale, specializing in treatment of dental patients with sedation and general anesthesia while he was an educator from 2013 to 2021.

His academic appointments at Temple University included, Director of the Temple Dental Sedation Center; Assistant Professor in Anesthesiology at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine and Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Medicine, and Surgery at the Kornberg School of Dentistry. From 2013 to 2016, Dr. Heleniak was Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.

While teaching at Penn and Temple, Dr. Heleniak trained dental students and residents on moderate sedation and how to handle medical emergencies in dentistry. At the Sedation Center, Dr. Heleniak provided sedation and general anesthesia for dental faculty treating patients and instructed residents learning to provide sedation. His teaching responsibilities also included courses in anesthesia and sedation for licensed professionals renewing anesthesia permits.

As an educator, Dr. Heleniak has made numerous contributions to support the next generation of dental professionals. His work as a Dentist Anesthesiologist allows many patients, who could not be treated in a regular dental operatory, to receive treatment for dental disease. PDA commends the work of Stanley J. Heleniak, DMD, and is pleased to acknowledge his contributions with the 2022 PDA Recognition Award.


 
 

 

PDA Public Service Award 

Renee Fennell, DMD

Renee Fennell, DMD, is the recipient of the 2022 Pennsylvania Dental Association Public Service Award for her contributions to improving the oral health of the public through direct service; her advocacy efforts for COVID-19 vaccinations, Medicare Part B and her work on diversity and inclusion initiatives to ensure all feel welcome and cared for in the dental office.

Leading by example, Dr. Fennell shows that service to others and advocacy for patients is a dentist’s true calling. A MOM-n-PA volunteer since the clinic’s inception in 2013, Dr. Fennell recruited volunteers for the 2021 mission in Philadelphia and served as the Pharmacy Lead.

Advocating for dentists and patients, Dr. Fennell and other leaders of the Philadelphia County Dental Society worked tirelessly with the Philadelphia Department of Health to ensure that dentists were included in the top tier for vaccine distribution and communicated to members which locations were offering vaccination appointments. Her efforts helped keep dental offices open and treating patients.

Dr. Fennell’s service on PDA’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee and her work as a Diversity Officer at Temple’s Kornberg School of Dentistry help support a mission to improve the oral health of the public, including people of all races, ethnic backgrounds, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

PDA is proud to recognize Dr. Fennell with the 2022 PDA Public Service Award and commends her efforts to support the needs of the dentists who provide dental care for the people of Philadelphia.


 

 
 



PDA Public Service Award 
The PDA Annual Awards Committee selected David R. Russell, DMD, as the recipient of the 2015 PDA Public Service Award for establishing a permanent dental clinic to provide comprehensive care for the guests of the Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg. The philosophy of restoration of oral health, function and appearance is a critical component of restoration of the entire self – a core goal of the mission. PDA is proud to recognize Dr. Russell’s efforts on behalf of the underserved population in Central PA.


PDA Recognition Award 
Steven Roland Jefferies, DDS, MS, who holds more than 28 patents will receive the PDA Recognition Award for his research and contributions to the art and science of dentistry. During his 20 year career at DENTSPLY International Dr. Jefferies advanced dentistry through product development. In his second career, spanning more than 40 years, he has contributed to the profession by educating future dental leaders. The PDA Annual Awards Committee is pleased to honor Dr. Jefferies for his contributions to dentistry as a researcher and an educator.
