Course Title:

Diagnostic Dilemma: Differential Diagnoses of the Oral Cavity 


Course Description:

The mouth is the mirror to the body. In this lecture, review common oral lesions, explore oral manifestations of systemic diseases, and redevelop your style for differential diagnoses. Learn how to identify signs of common bodily conditions, understand the connection between oral and systemic health, and implement an interdisciplinary approach to treating patients.


Course Objectives:

-Review common oral lesions and mucosal conditions for clinical practice

-Understand the telltale oral signs of common systemic diseases 

-Explore the connection between oral and systemic health 


BIO:
Dr. Roopali Kulkarni is a board-certified oral medicine specialist. She is an Assistant Professor of Oral Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and serves as the Assistant Director of the postgraduate oral medicine residency program. She obtained both her Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) and Master of Public Health degrees (M.P.H.) from the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her postgraduate residency training in Oral Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, serving as Chief Resident her second year. She currently teaches predoctoral and postdoctoral students clinically and didactically. She was the 2022 recipient of the Penn Dental Medicine Earle Bank Hoyt award for dedication and excellence in teaching. Her scholarly activity focuses on research within oral medicine and public health. She is an active researcher in the World Workshop on Oral Medicine and is a Senior Fellow at the Penn Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics. In
addition to her faculty responsibilities, she treats patients within the University of Pennsylvania Health System and is the Section Chief of Oral Medicine at the ChristianaCare Hospital System. Dr. Kulkarni has maintained active involvement in organized dentistry. She currently serves as a national media spokesperson for the American Dental Association, on the Philadelphia County Dental Society board, and on multiple councils and committees in the Pennsylvania Dental Association, American Dental Education Association, and the American Academy of Oral Medicine. She is a 2024 recipient of the American Dental Association “10 Under 10” Award and the 2024 recipient of the Pennsylvania Dental Association Recognition Award, praising her commitment to dental education. She travels across the state and country providing continuing education lectures on topics in oral medicine, public health, and leadership development. Her passions lie in community service, wellness, advocacy, dance, and music!

Course Title: 
Dentistry and Opioid Prescribing- Forging a Safer Way Forward


Course Objectives

The objectives of the course are to help attendees understand both the scope and cause of the opioid epidemic as well as the potential civil and criminal liabilities for improper prescribing. In addition, risk management techniques and the use of the PDMP database will be discussed and things to consider before writing an opioid prescription.

BIO: 
Michael Kaner DMD JD, graduated from  the University of Rochester and Tufts University School of Dentistry in 1985. After completing a GPR in Allentown, Pennsylvania, he assumed the practice of a retiring dentist in Feasterville, Pennsylvania, where he has practiced since 1986. In 2003 he earned a JD degree from Concord Law School and is a member of both the State Bar of California and the District of Columbia. A Master of the Academy of General Dentistry and past President of the Pennsylvania AGD, ,he is a national trustee for the AGD and Vice President of the AGD Foundation, the charitable arm of the AGD. Dr. Kaner is a trained forensic dentist and is  a member of DMORT, the Federal disaster response team. He was part of the team that helped identify those killed on 9/11 in both Somerset County, PA., where Flight 93 crashed and at the Medical Examiner’s Office in New York City. In addition, he spent two weeks in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina and two weeks in NYC at the onset of the Covid-19 crisis. 
He is also a member of the PDA and  Montgomery-Bucks Dental Society since 1987.
